The International Association of Business Communicators (IABC) is the largest communications association in the world, with more than 150,000 professionals affiliated in 80 countries. IABC provides products, services, activities and networking opportunities to individuals and organizations to achieve excellence in public relations, employee communication, marketing communication, public affairs and other forms of communication.

IABC/San Antonio was the San Antonio regional chapter of this global organization. Its mission was to help its 70+ members (and non-members also working in communications locally) share ideas, knowledge and resources; advance professionally through networking and professional development opportunities. The chapter also helped members achieve communications sucesss for their client and employers.
The San Antonio chapter was one of 25 chapters in IABC’s Southern Region, comprised of 14 states and three countries. Its annual Bronze Quill Awards program distinguished local professional communicators by honoring winners who have achieved excellence in their work.

The San Antonio chapter won the prestigious “2005 International Small Chapter of the Year” award at the professional organization’s annual Leadership Institute, held Feb. 25, 2005 in Seattle. "Wisdom team" members (former chapter presidents) who volunteeed to keep the chapter solvent included Becky Bridges; Sheri Rosen, ABC; Betsy Pasley, ABC; Debbie Talley; Lisa Owen; Joy Capps Parrish; and Lisa Bastian. Sadly, the chapter disbanded in 2014 est. due to a lack of interest.

Bastian served as a board member of IABC/San Antonio from 2001 to 2012. During this time she recruited, trained and mentored communication professionals in the areas of programming, membership, media relations, sponsorship, etc. Bastian represented the chapter via regional and local meetings, helped find key sponsors vital to the chapter’s fiscal health, and worked with graphic designers to create new logos for both the chapter and its Bronze Quill program.

While a two-term President of IABC/SA (2006 to 2008), she led a revamped chapter board of 10 business communicators (one of the largest, most active boards in recent history). The efforts of these board members built upon previous board activity, and dramatically grew the chapter from 42 to 70+ members. Bastian, board members and former chapter presidents helped produce annual Bronze Quill awards programs, annual workshops, and monthly professional development luncheons.
In 2008, the chapter was honored with the challenge of hosting the global IABC leadership conference in San Antonio. Bastian was a key leader on the board member team in charge of ensuring this high-profile event was successful.

Bastian's past positions: President, VP Membership, VP Sponsorships and Co-Chair of Bronze Quill contest (2010 & 2011). Also former member of IABC/Cincinnati and IABC/Kansas City chapters. All work was conducted on a voluntary basis.
