NLA Brief Lawyer Newsletter
Client: National Lawyers Association, United States
Project: Writing, editing, producing quarterly newsletter

The National Lawyers Association (NLA) is a national bar association founded in 1993 by some of the thousands of lawyers who fled the American Bar Association due to that group voting to officially support abortion. NLA members are from all 50 states, District of Columbia, and points overseas. NLA is the only national bar association which supports the sanctity of life from conception until natural death. It also is unique in the fact that it proposes the Constitution should be interpreted in light of the principles and transcendent truths set forth in the Declaration of Independence.

TASKS
NLA’s president hired Bastian as Editor of the bar association’s quarterly newsletter, The NLA Brief. Bastian was charged with revamping the newsletter’s format to reflect a lawyer-like, professional appearance, and to oversee the entire production process with help from a contract graphic designer. In addition, Bastian helped set up new newsletter departments and come up with story ideas for each issue in collaboration with the president. She also wrote most of the articles, and edited copy submitted by members and allied lawyer organizations. As part of this editorial process, Bastian suggested that NLA’s logo should be redesigned. The resulting new logo better reflected the professionalism of the organization and also was well received.

The president and other board members credited this professional-grade newsletter with aiding in member retention and recruitment, and raising awareness of NLA’s mission and achievements. (Bastian worked on this print-only publication for almost two years before the board decided to move to an online publication produced by lawyer members only.)
